Pilates

Pilates is a great way to strengthen, stretch and balance your body. Here at CORE, we focus on providing high quality, engaging pilates classes – safe, effective and enjoyable. By offering small group classes, we can address your personal needs with our high-quality instruction. Please note that we are fully certified and insured.

What is pilates?

Pilates consists of a range of exercises to increase strength, flexibility and body awareness, develop correct posture and movement. Pilates develops your focus on deep core muscles, the lower abdominals and the pelvic floor. All pilates movements include these core muscles. Pilates also focuses on correct shoulder, hip and spine alignment. This focus is important for good posture and the prevention of injury.

Pilates will affect the way you stand, sit and move. Pilates will assist rehabilitation from injury, prevention of injury, participation in sport and general health and fitness. Physiotherapists prescribe pilates exercises, while both physiotherapists and doctors now advocate pilates for a number of injuries and medical conditions.

Mat, pilates chair or reformer?

***

Pilates exercises can be performed on the mat, pilates chair or reformer; all provide similar benefits, enable working against resistance (your own body weight on the mat, springs on the pilates chair and springs and pullies on the reformer), all are suitable for beginners to experienced pilates clients. The pilates chair and reformer were originally designed by Joseph Pilates (the developer of pilates) to improve the performance of exercises on the mat.

Originating in California, pilates on a stand up paddle board (SUP), outdoors on the water – we call this SUPilates – is a new, challenging yet relaxing experience! It is suitable for beginners to experienced pilates clients, and doesn’t involve getting wet unless you want to take a dip on a hot Welsh day! CORE offers the only SUPilates class in Wales.

CORE offers each of these four great class options – pilates on the mat, pilates chair and reformer, and SUPilates.

Mat classes

Mat pilates classes aim at toning and mobilising the body, focussing on the core posture muscles, including the abdominals and pelvic floor. Classes last for one hour, for up to eight people. We usually start standing on the mat to warm up and perform balance work. You will then kneel, sit, lie on your side, back and front to perform different exercises. We use the pilates ring, soft ball, spiky ball, balance cushion, roller, band and block. The pilates instructor will help you perform the exercises safely and correctly, giving individual attention. You work at your own level, as easier and harder versions of all exercises are given to suit all members of the class.

Mat classes are available for groups and one-to-one.

Pilates reformer 1-1

Pilates reformer 1-1 sessions aim at toning and mobilising the body, focussing on the core posture muscles, including the abdominals and pelvic floor. Sessions last for one hour. We usually start standing to warm up and then sit, kneel, lie and stand on the reformer to perform different exercises. The springs offer low to high resistance, dependent upon your strength and range of movement. The rope pulley systems can be used with the arms and legs. We also use the pilates jump board, box, ring, soft ball and pole. The pilates instructor will help you perform the exercises safely and correctly, giving individual attention. You work at your own level, as easier and harder versions of all exercises are given to suit all members of the class.

Pilates reformer classes are available for groups and one-to-one.

SUPilates classes

Pilates on a stand up paddle board on the water – this is SUPilates. It is a truly different pilates experience, due to the relaxing rhythm of the water. While SUPilates can also be challenging, it doesn’t involve being in the water! We paddle out (kneeling if you are new to SUP) to our special anchored pilates platform, where we attach our boards and start our special SUPilates session. Bliss! Sessions take place at Bala Lake from May 2021.

All sessions are weather dependent. Please contact CORE before booking.

Corporate pilates courses can be run in the workplace. Sport-specific pilates sessions are also available. Please Contact Us to discuss your requirements.

Dr. Claire Paisley is a fully qualified and experienced pilates and SUP instructor. Claire has trained with Fitness Wales, the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute, and BSUPA and has been teaching for eight years. Classes use the pilates ring, blocks, balance boards, bands, soft balls, rollers and massage balls.
