Yes, we’ve just been recommended by the UK Department of Health to eat more fibre in our diet. This is the first advice on fibre since the early 1990s. We are advised to eat 25% more fibre than previously, to reduce our risk of type 2 diabetes, as well as bowel cancer and heart disease. So, we now need to aim for 5 fruit and vegetable portions a day AND  5 cereals (such as bread, breakfast cereals, potatoes, pasta), mainly wholegrains.

redapple healthFor an adult, eating all of the following in a day would meet the new recommendation: five portions of fruit and vegetables, two slices of wholemeal bread, a portion of high fibre breakfast cereal, a baked potato and a portion of whole wheat pasta.
